About me.
I wish I had a snappy little elevator pitch to tell you what I do. It would make SEO so much easier and make selling myself more simple.
I used to just say, ‘I’m a designer.’ Nice and simple. Except people then ask ‘what kind of designer?’ Now, the pressure to conform to a niche has made it increasingly difficult to stick with a one word answer.
For a while I tried saying ‘I make stuff’, but that felt kind of ridiculous. Lately, I’ve thought about going with ‘creator’, but it reeks of omniscience and recruitment for a cult.
Two things I can say for certain: I’m creative and insatiably curious.
I also have bipolar disorder.
My first creative love was music. I started playing in bands when I was about 13. Apart from that, I loved all subjects at school. When it came time to pick a degree, I chose architecture because I thought it included bits of every subject.
When I was at university, I bought my first DSLR and fell completely in love with photography. I also started to learn how think like a designer; to stop objectifying the world around me and consider function over form. Interrogating idea’s to find purpose and meaning beyond the aesthetic.
At 19, the band I was in got signed to an indie label. Of course at the time I assumed international stardom was months away. The fact that I’m not a world famous musician should give away how this one played out. However, I still love to make music and you should definitely listen to it to stroke my ego.
I didn’t continue further eduction in architecture, instead I got a job as a designer and also studied a course in politics and sociology part time. I worked on print catalogues and magazines for a few years before I got the chance to start art directing commercial photography. After a while I got the chance to move into digital and learned how to design websites.
In 2015 I took the leap into freelancing. I couldn’t get any work freelancing. I did however, make the project I’m most proud of. It took about 3 years, but I launched an automotive media brand called Hidden Garage. Along with a close friend, I made a book and series of films about Jaguar and The Alpine Rally. No one really watched them but I couldn’t care less.
So instead of freelancing I joined THG (The Hut Group), and after a few months was made head of design for lifestyle brands. I learned so much about every aspect of a career. Leadership, mentoring, personal growth, building a team, stakeholder management and of course, design. The breadth of work was staggering: Branding, video, campaign, advertising, art direction, packaging and social. As well working on the UI for the underlying technology platform across all THG sites.
For the last few years, I’ve been making art. Manic me got it in his head that I had a job as a digital artist in California and bought a fancy new iPad Pro. So I like to think I’ve made the best of it and have now sold nearly 10000 pieces.
I then joined a design agency in Liverpool called Mando and designed websites and digital products for a few years. A lot of the role was acting as a consultant for digital transformation projects helping to digitise offline processes.
